How To Honor and Display It

Dial-up Internet Access Set-up for Linux/Unix

To start KPPP find the button on the taskbar at the far left, this is analogous to the start button in windows.  In the menu that appears select the Internet button and then the KPPP button.  This should bring up a dialog box that has space for you to enter your connection, login ID and password.

At the bottom of the box are a series of buttons push the setup button.

That should bring up the KPPP Configuration dialog box. It has six tabs on the top the first one being Account, push the new button (the only one available).

Now the New Account dialog box is on your screen. The first tab is the Dial tab, here you enter a connection name you can put The Dial Up Store,  if you want or anything to identify this particular account. Next enter the phone number you will be dialing. Enter it just as you would when dialing, including an area code if needed and with dashes like this: 555-555-1234.  Make sure that the Authentication is set to PAP and that the store password is checked.

Now select the IP tab.  Make sure the Dynamic IP Address is selected unless you are setting up a static IP address then you enter your address and subnet mask that was assigned to you by The Dial Up Store.

Select the DNS tab.  Here you will want to enter these two DNS IP addresses:

Network Qwest (qw):

  • Primary DNS: 4.2.2.1
  • Secondary DNS: 4.2.2.2
Network Telia (te):
  • Primary DNS: 205.199.193.2
  • Secondary DNS: 205.137.48.7

Network UUnet (uu):

  • Primary DNS: 198.6.1.218.
  • Secondary DNS: 198.6.100.218
Network Starnet (st):
  • Primary DNS: 216.126.128.40
  • Secondary DNS: 216.126.136.250

Enter the first one and then hit the add button then do the same for the second one.

Now select the Gateway tab,  just verify that Default Gateway is the selected option and the Assign the Default Route to this Gateway option is checked, then hit the OK button at the bottom of the box. That should bring you back to the Kppp configuration dialog box.

Now select the Device tab. Make sure the Modem Device drop menu is set to /dev/modem.  If you know exactly which port your modem is connected to then you can select that. Example: /dev/ttyS0.

Next select the Modem tab.  Here we will see if KPPP can find your modem.  Push the Query Modem button and let it go to work. If KPPP can't find your modem you may need to refer to your modem documentation to set it up correctly.

Select the PPP tab here you might want to change the default pppd timeout setting to 60 seconds.  This will allow you to connect even if it takes longer than 30 seconds. Select any other options you may want.

Now select the OK button at the bottom and the KPPP configuration dialog box will disappear and the KPPP dialog box we first saw will reappear.

The Connect To: space should now have what you entered as your account name displayed.  Now enter your Login ID and your Password, select show log window if you want to see what's going on as you connect, then push the connect button. Your Modem should begin to dial and soon you should be connected.  Open up your browser and you are ready to surf the net.
